Gold deposits in Idaho: where the ounces were, where the projects are, and how to hold ground

Idaho gave up about 2.9 million ounces of gold from one placer basin alone, then went quiet for decades. Today the state is a patchwork of small mines, a few large drill projects and one very big permitted one. This guide is for claim holders, small mining companies, exploration teams and consultants who want an accurate map of the gold deposits in Idaho, the county, BLM, Forest Service and state steps that sit on top of them, and a realistic view of what satellite data can show in each kind of terrain.

The honest summary of gold deposits in Idaho is a story in three parts. The old placer and vein districts built the state. The modern work is epithermal, Carlin-type and shear-zone targets that need real geology, not panning. And the large prize, the Stibnite project, is a permitting and construction story that happens to sit on one of the most recognizable historic districts. If you hold ground here, or are weighing ground, you need to know which of these your project resembles.

Idaho differs from Alaska and Nevada in one useful way: there is no separate state claim system on public land. You stake under the 1872 Mining Law, record at the county, and file with the BLM. Where Idaho adds its own rules is on the ground. The Idaho Department of Lands regulates exploration with earth-moving equipment, reclamation plans and bonds, and it runs a separate law for placer and dredge work. We cover each step with the numbers published by the agencies.

Gold deposits in Idaho: read the history first, because it tells you where to look

The Idaho State Historical Society reference series on mining in Idaho records that Boise Basin was discovered on 2 August 1862, grew to about 20,000 people during the rush, and had yielded about 2.9 million ounces of gold by the time of its 1985 revision, much of it from placers worked first with hydraulic giants and later by dredges. Quartz lodes opened in late 1862 on Granite Creek and gave the basin its staying power. The same document says Silver City and DeLamar in Owyhee County are credited with more than one million ounces of gold and twenty million ounces of silver, and that arrangements were completed in 1976 for a large open pit at DeLamar expected to yield about 24,000 oz of gold a year.

Those numbers are the past, and gold deposits in Idaho today look different. The Idaho Geological Survey Staff Report 23-02 (covering 2020 and 2021, updated in April 2025) shows active gold mines as small dots on its map. Its main producer example is the Golden Chest mine at Murray in the north, where the Idaho pit finished in 2020 after taking 121,300 tonnes of ore at 3.12 g/t, which works out to roughly 12,000 contained ounces by our arithmetic. Endomines restarted the small Friday mine on the Orogrande shear zone near Elk City, and had start-up problems at the mill. Everything larger is a project.

Mined ounces and company resources are different kinds of number. The bars show scale only: Idaho has one project (Stibnite) whose reserve exceeds the entire historic output of Boise Basin.

The practical reading for gold deposits in Idaho is that the historic placers tell you a lode system was upstream, and the modern projects are at the edges of those old districts. Companies are not discovering new Idaho gold in unexplored valleys. They are re-drilling old pits with induced polarization, structural mapping and 3D models. That is the kind of target a satellite screen can sharpen, because the old district boundaries and the new structure interpretations can be overlaid on alteration maps.

๐Ÿ”‘ Idaho’s gold is often a by-product of another story
Stibnite, the largest gold project, also carries 148 million pounds of antimony in its reserve. Silver City is as much a silver district as a gold one. When you assess gold deposits in Idaho, ask what else is in the rock, because the by-product often decides whether a mine gets permitted and financed.

Mining claims Idaho: county recorder, BLM and Forest Service in sequence

The sequence is shorter than Alaska’s, but every step has a hard date. Idaho Code 47-602 requires a corner monument or post at least four feet high and four inches square or in diameter, set before the notice is recorded. Idaho Code 47-604 then gives the locator 90 days to file a copy of the notice of location with the county recorder, and says failure to do so is an abandonment of the claim. The federal rule runs in parallel: the BLM wants its copy within 90 calendar days of location, with a map. The BLM Idaho mining page says recording means locating the claim, recording it in the county and sending a copy to the BLM State Office in Boise.

From stake to surface permit on an Idaho claim Locate and monument; county recorder within 90 days; BLM within 90 days; 1 September maintenance fee or waiver; surface approval from BLM or Forest Service; Idaho Department of Lands notice for earth-moving exploration. Steps two and three are separate filings with separate offices. A county receipt does not satisfy the BLM, and a BLM case number does not satisfy the county.

Gold deposits in Idaho sit on three kinds of land

The BLM manages nearly 12 million acres of public land in Idaho and about 36.5 million acres of subsurface mineral estate, and it counts more than 40,000 active mining claims, 39 authorized plans of operation and 32 active exploration notices in 2025. Forest Service land is managed separately: the BLM page tells claimants to contact the local national forest, and recording a claim with the BLM does not authorize surface disturbance on forest land. Depending on the work, the Forest Service asks for a notice of intent or a plan of operations. The state owns endowment land, which it leases for minerals rather than opening to staking. Idaho Code 47-704 lets the Land Board lease state land for prospecting and mining, with annual rental of not less than $1 per acre and a royalty set by the board. Private land needs a landowner agreement.

Federal claims owe no royalty to the federal government for locatable minerals, according to the BLM Idaho page. The cost to hold is the maintenance fee. The BLM mining claim fees page lists $25 processing, $49 location and $200 maintenance for a new lode claim, and $200 per claim each 1 September afterward. Holders of ten or fewer claims nationwide can file a waiver, and Form 3830-2 carries no processing fee. A $15 per claim affidavit or notice of intent to hold is due by 30 December.

Gold deposits in Idaho on national forest land

Much of the central Idaho gold country, from Boise Basin to the Salmon River and Elk City, lies in national forest. A claim there is a valid possessory right, but the Forest Service controls what you can do on its surface. Depending on the work involved, the agency asks for a notice of intent or a full plan of operations. The BLM says authorization is required before exploration that creates more than casual-use disturbance, with a reclamation plan and financial guarantee. Check with the local forest or BLM office on which side of that line your work falls. Remote screening is attractive here for a simple reason: it adds no ground disturbance in the first phase.

What Idaho adds on top: the Department of Lands

State rules apply to the work, not the claim. The IDAPA 20.03.02, the Idaho Department of Lands mined land reclamation rules (current text carries 1 July 2026 amendment dates) requires an operator using motorized earth-moving equipment to locate minerals for sale to notify the Department before, or within seven days after, starting exploration. No application fee or financial assurance applies to exploration that is not a mining operation, and drill holes, roads and trenches must be reclaimed within one year of abandonment. Once disturbance reaches the point of a reclamation plan, the base application fee runs from $500 for a plan of up to 5 acres to $750 above 40 acres under the simpler plan route, and financial assurance on a mine of five acres or less is a minimum of $5,000 per acre, capped at $15,000 per acre unless the Board follows a special process. Placer and dredge work follows a separate law, the Dredge and Placer Mining Protection Act, rather than the mined land reclamation rules.

โš  Gold deposits in Idaho are often on land with two landlords
Mineral estate and surface estate can belong to different parties, and national forest land adds a third approval track. A claim recorded in the right county and filed with the BLM still needs forest or BLM surface authorization before an excavator moves. Plan the permit path at the same time as the staking, not afterward.
๐Ÿ’ก Use the IGS property number as your due-diligence anchor
Every entry in the IGS Mines and Prospects database carries a map location number that is also its property number in the Survey’s scanned mineral property files, which are filed by 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. Before you pay for a block near old workings, pull the file for each nearby property. Old stopes, shafts and dumps are both your best geological clue and your biggest liability.

Idaho gold districts by terrain, and what a satellite sees in each

For gold deposits in Idaho the terrain varies enormously, and one map holds desert, alpine and rain-shadow forest. That is good news for a remote-sensing screen, because the same method behaves very differently across them. The table pairs each district with its sourced deposit type and an honest satellite read. Where a company reported figures in the IGS report they are repeated as company data, not as ours.

District or project (gold deposits in Idaho) Deposit type (source) Terrain What a satellite screen can do
Silver City / DeLamar (Owyhee County) Classic epithermal silver-gold; three centers: DeLamar, Florida Mountain, War Eagle Mountain High desert, sparse cover Best case: argillic and iron-oxide alteration on exposed volcanics is mappable with multispectral and short-wave infrared bands.
Black Pine (Cassia County) Carlin-type disseminated gold in Oquirrh Formation clastics and limestone; 1.7 Moz at 0.5 g/t indicated Range-front, pediment cover Partial: ridges show decalcification and iron staining; the Rangefront discovery sits under a down-faulted pediment.
Kilgore (Clark County) Young volcanic- and sediment-hosted epithermal system, about 1 Moz resource Snake River Plain margin Partial: volcanic alteration is readable where not buried by younger cover.
Beartrack / Leesburg (Lemhi County) Hydrothermal system 5 km along strike, localized on the Coiner Fault; 36 Mt indicated at 1.16 g/t Forested mountains Limited: structure and lineaments help; alteration is hidden under timber.
Elk City / Orogrande (Idaho County) Shear-zone gold along a 20 km north-south structure, plus large placers Forest, poor outcrop Limited: the survey report itself says outcrop is poor; geophysics and soil lines lead.
Stibnite (Valley County) Gold-antimony; 4.8 Moz reserve at 1.43 g/t Forest, old workings and cleanup sites Mixed: legacy disturbance and tailings complicate any spectral signal.
Murray (Shoshone County) Gold-quartz veins along the Idaho fault; Golden Chest at 3.12 g/t in the Idaho pit Forested Structure only; the veins are narrow compared with a 10 to 30 m pixel.

Gold deposits in Idaho at Stibnite: a permit story with a cleanup attached

The IGS report describes the Stibnite plan as three open pits, about $1 billion of capital, a 15-year project life and restoration of fish passage up the East Fork of the South Fork Salmon River at the end. It treats the site as a brownfield that supplied antimony and tungsten in both world wars, and says the mining resource of 4 to 5 million ounces is the way to pay for the cleanup. The EPA agreed with the company to begin pre-mining removal actions on wartime waste and tailings. On the federal side, Perpetua reported that the Forest Service issued a Final Record of Decision approving the project in January 2025, and the company said it would focus on remaining ancillary permits and construction readiness. We have not seen a construction decision, and a reader should check the Forest Service project record and the company’s filings for status before relying on any date.

๐ŸŒฟ Stibnite pairs a mine with a remediation bill
The structure matters for anyone studying gold deposits in Idaho as an investment or a partner: the cleanup of legacy tailings is tied to the mining plan, so permitting risk and environmental liability are the same file. Satellite screening of old disturbed ground can help baseline change over time, but it does not replace soil, water or fish-habitat monitoring.

Black Pine and Kilgore: the eastern Idaho Carlin-type and volcanic systems

Black Pine was mined by Pegasus until 1997, when low gold prices closed it before much district exploration had been done. Liberty Gold then drilled 46,000 m in 2020 and a 70,000 m reverse-circulation program in 2021 across a 14 sq km Carlin-type district, and reported an initial indicated resource of 1.7 Moz at 0.5 g/t gold in July 2021. The Rangefront discovery is a down-faulted pediment play: hole LBP358 assayed 1.23 g/t over 24 m and 1.37 g/t over 50 m on a flat area at the base of the hills. That is the cautionary example for any satellite program. The old mine area is bright with alteration, and the new discovery was on flat gravel where there is little spectral signal at all. Excellon’s Kilgore project in Clark County, which hosts a 1-million-ounce gold resource in a young volcanic and sediment-hosted system, sits across the Snake River Plain margin with similar cover issues.

DeLamar and the Owyhee Mountains: the desert case

Integra Resources kept three rigs busy through 2020 at DeLamar, the site of the Kinross mine that closed in 1998, and drilled all year in 2021 while advancing permitting and engineering studies toward a prefeasibility study. The IGS report describes three mineralized centers (DeLamar, Florida Mountain and War Eagle Mountain) plus a greenfield area called Black Sheep, and says Integra funded two years of geologic mapping by IGS over two 7.5-minute quadrangles, released in mid-2021 as map DWM-193. Deep drilling under Florida Mountain intersected high-grade silver, including one interval assaying 28.3 g/t gold equivalent in crustiform quartz vein. Here the old districts are exposed and well mapped, and a satellite screen is best used to look at what lies between the known centers, the Black Sheep style of greenfield ground, where nobody has drilled.

Arlington Gold Hunt 2025 | AI DCIP, Hyperspectral & LIDAR - BC

Rows with good exposure are where Farmonaut-style screening earns its fee. In the Owyhee desert the surface is the signal. In the Idaho batholith it is mostly canopy. A single map of Idaho does not exist for satellites: the same imagery that clearly flags alteration at DeLamar says almost nothing about a timbered ridge at Elk City, and the report we write labels the difference.

Gold grades of Idaho projects named in the IGS report Black Pine 0.5 grams per tonne, Beartrack 1.16, Stibnite reserve 1.43, Golden Chest Idaho pit 3.12. Three of the four are bulk or open-pit grades near 1 g/t. They need large, altered footprints, which is the thing optical and infrared satellites see best when rock is exposed.

Gold deposits in Idaho by structure: the Orogrande shear and the Coiner fault

Two structures keep coming up in the IGS report. The Orogrande shear zone runs about 20 km north to south near Elk City and hosts lode gold alongside large placers. At Beartrack, mineralization is localized along the north-south Coiner Fault and the Panther Creek lineament, which the report says has been newly interpreted as one structural zone. Radar and optical lineament mapping can trace faults like these across terrain where you cannot walk the whole length. They cannot say which segment carries gold, which is why Revival used IP-resistivity and Idaho Champion used soil geochemistry along the same ground.

๐Ÿ“Š A resource number is a company claim with a date on it
Resources quoted here were reported in 2020 and 2021 by the companies named in the IGS report, under different reporting standards and cut-offs. Several may have changed. Satellite outputs are exploration targets, not resources. This is general information and not investment advice.

Gold deposits in Idaho are not all lode: placers and the Dredge and Placer Act

Elk City, Boise Basin, Salmon River bars and the Snake River all produced placer gold. In Idaho, placer and dredge work are regulated under Idaho Code Title 47, Chapter 13 and IDAPA 20.03.01, not under the hardrock reclamation rules, and the application fee is $50 for each 10 acres or part of it. A satellite screen cannot see placer gold, but it can map the bedrock source and drainage geometry upstream, which is the question a placer operator is really asking.

Public data for gold in Idaho, and where Farmonaut fits

For gold deposits in Idaho, start with the IGS Mines and Prospects database. IGS describes more than 8,000 mining properties, with production for gold and silver reported in troy ounces, lode ore in tons and placer yardage, drawn from US Bureau of Mines records. It warns that ore amounts are given as letters in broad ranges to protect confidentiality and that tonnage and metal output must be compared with caution. Layer the IGS statewide geologic map on top, check land status with the BLM’s MLRS at mlrs.blm.gov, and read the IGS mining and exploration reports for the district you care about.

Then bring in the satellite layer. You give us the polygon, as KML, KMZ or a boundary, and the mineral target. We analyze multispectral and, where the project calls for it, hyperspectral imagery to flag alteration zones, faults and fractures, and return ranked target zones, prospectivity heat maps and georeferenced GIS files in 5 to 20 business days. The early phase involves no ground disturbance, and Farmonaut reports it can cut early-exploration timelines from months to days and cost by up to 80 to 85 percent compared with ground programs. Our work covers 100,000+ hectares, 20+ minerals and 25+ countries, and we published a case-study video on finding star garnets by satellite in Idaho. Start with Map Your Mining Site, or read about satellite-based mineral detection.

Holding Idaho ground? Find out which part of it is worth a drill rig.

Send us the boundary of your claim block or lease. We return a satellite prospectivity read before you spend on soil lines, geophysics or a bond.

Know the limits before you buy a screen from anyone. We do not see gold. Where timber or pediment gravel covers the rock, the read is partial and our report says so. We are not a licensing agent, land-title adviser or broker, and we cannot tell you whether a claim is valid. Those answers come from the county recorder, the BLM record and a land professional.

  1. Verify land status in MLRS and with the county recorder.
  2. Pull IGS records for any old workings on the ground.
  3. Screen with satellites and mark exposed versus covered terrain.
  4. Estimate the permit path with the calculator above.
  5. Plan soil and geophysics only on ground the screen supports.

Frequently asked questions about gold deposits in Idaho

Where are the main gold deposits in Idaho?

Gold deposits in Idaho are spread across several districts. Historic output came from Boise Basin (about 2.9 million ounces), Silver City and DeLamar (over 1 million), and many districts across the Idaho batholith and Salmon River country. Current projects include Stibnite, Black Pine, Kilgore, Beartrack and DeLamar.

Is Idaho gold mining still active, and what is left of the gold deposits in Idaho?

Small gold mines operate, such as Golden Chest at Murray, but the IGS 2020-2021 report shows no large operating gold mine. Stibnite received a Forest Service Record of Decision in January 2025 and the company was working on remaining permits and financing.

How do I record claims over gold deposits in Idaho?

Set the monuments, file a copy of the location notice with the county recorder within 90 days, and file with the BLM within 90 days. Pay the BLM fees, then the maintenance fee each 1 September or file a waiver.

Does Idaho have state mining claims like Alaska?

No. On public land you locate federal claims and record them with the county. State endowment land is leased through the Department of Lands instead.

What does exploring gold deposits in Idaho need from the state?

Earth-moving exploration needs a notice to the Idaho Department of Lands before, or within seven days after, it begins. A reclamation plan and bond apply once the work counts as mining.

Can satellites find gold deposits in Idaho?

They can flag alteration and structure where rock is exposed, as in the Owyhee desert, and are limited under forest and pediment cover. A satellite result is an exploration target, not a resource.

Does Farmonaut sell Idaho claims?

No. Farmonaut is not a broker, licensing agent or legal adviser. We screen areas you hold or plan to apply for.
