Each episode follows the same job. Dodge and Ibarra visit a small mine, work out why it loses gold, rebuild the processing plant and scout the claim for better ground. What does “Mine Rescue” mean on the show?

It is a business rescue. The owners in the series are usually small placer miners, meaning people who work loose gravel in stream beds or old river terraces rather than hard rock. Their problem is typically that gold goes into the plant and too little comes out. Dodge’s job is to find the leak, and Ibarra’s is to build the fix.

The Discovery UK listing for later seasons shows the pattern. One episode has the pair building a first hard-rock mill hammer system for a California miner. Another sends them to help a rookie Idaho miner who closed the family auto shop to chase gold. Those are plant and ground problems, not rescue operations.

Where Mine Rescue films: places by season

The same page lists the states and provinces visited in each season. Montana, Oregon and British Columbia each appear in five of the six seasons. Alaska, Arizona and Colorado appear in four. The Yukon appears in seasons 2 and 6, and one season (4) visited North Carolina. That spread matters for a reason that has nothing to do with television: placer gold is found in many places, but it pays only where the right gravel meets the right water and a valid claim. Alaska, which has both large lode mines and placer mines, produced an estimated 22% of US mined gold in 2025, and the US also has numerous smaller placer mines, mostly in Alaska and the western states (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026).

How placer gold recovery works, and what a wash plant fix is worth

Gold is very dense and does not react with most chemicals, so it settles out of moving water and collects in the low-flow spots of a stream: below a narrow gorge, at tributary junctions and on the inside of bends. In a placer deposit the richest values sit on or near bedrock or on a clay layer called false bedrock (Washington Department of Natural Resources, placer gold mining report).

The same report explains the basic tools. A sluice box is an inclined trough with riffles (small bars) on the bottom that give gold and other heavy minerals a place to lodge while water carries lighter material away. It adds that very fine gold is the hard part: fine gold averages about 12,000 particles per ounce, and very fine gold about 40,000, and those light flakes can be carried a long way by the current. The report says long sluices help break down clayey gravel and give fine gold time to settle, so short sluices lose more of it.

What is the gold-recovery fix worth to the owner?

Enter the plant’s throughput, the gold grade of the gravel and the recovery rate before and after a plant change. The result shows extra ounces and their value at a price you set. The gold price must be entered by you: spot gold was US$4,013.60 per troy ounce at 6:54 a.m. New York time on 26 October 2026 (Kitco).

Is Freddy Dodge a real mine rescue expert? Emergency rescue explained

No. His expertise is gold recovery and equipment, and the public record does not describe him as a rescue-team member. Real mine rescue is regulated. Under US rule 30 CFR 49.20, the operator of each underground coal mine must make two certified mine rescue teams available. Team members must know the mine and take part at least once a year in two local mine rescue contests (30 CFR 49.20). MSHA’s guidance adds that team members must complete 96 hours of annual training, and each mine needs a rescue station no more than one hour’s ground travel away (MSHA mine rescue teams Q&A). MSHA regulates these teams, not television producers.

The need for that system is real. MSHA’s annual summary records 28 fatalities across US mines in 2025, 31 in 2024 and 41 in 2023, compared with 22 in 2018 (MSHA At a Glance, FY 1978-2025). Metal and nonmetal mines, the group that includes gold, recorded 25 of the 2025 deaths (MSHA metal/nonmetal fatalities). In early 2025, MSHA reported ten miner deaths between 3 January and 5 March, more than triple the same period in 2024. Powered haulage was the most common cause, with four deaths (MSHA safety alert).
