Tantalite Price per Tonne: Chart and Drivers
Tantalite is priced per pound of Ta2O5, so a tonne of 30% concentrate holds about 661 lb of oxide. Argus put tantalite at US$149 to 156 per lb in February 2026 (USGS 2025 estimate: US$180 per kg).

Key takeaways
- A tonne of 30% Ta2O5 concentrate holds about 661 lb of oxide, so US$150 per lb is about US$99,200 per tonne before deductions.
- USGS reports a tantalite annual average of US$158 to 196 per kg of Ta2O5 for 2021 to 2025 (2025 is an estimate).
- Argus assessed tantalite at US$149 to 156 per lb on 19 February 2026, up 43% from the start of the year; Reuters put European prices at US$200 to 210 per lb in mid-March.
- The DRC, Rwanda and Nigeria made about 2,090 of the world’s 2,500 tonnes of contained tantalum in 2025 (USGS estimate).
- Copper is quoted per tonne of metal; USGS gives a 2025 COMEX average of 480 cents per lb, about US$10,580 per tonne.

There is no single public price for a tonne of tantalite. The trade quotes it per pound of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) inside the concentrate, and the quotes that are published openly differ by grade and delivery point. In February 2026 Argus assessed tantalite at US$149 to 156 per lb cif main port, and in March European prices reached US$200 to 210 per lb, the highest since the 2000s, according to Reuters. Turn that into tonnes and a 30% Ta2O5 concentrate is worth about US$98,500 to 103,000 per tonne at the February range and about US$139,000 at the March high, before deductions. The sections below show the arithmetic, the dated price points, the reasons for the jump and a calculator for your own grade and terms.
Tantalite price per tonne: the short answer
Tantalite is the main ore of tantalum, a metal used in capacitors, aerospace parts and nuclear technology, as Reuters notes. Concentrate is sold by the pound of contained Ta2O5. To get a price per tonne you need three things: the Ta2O5 grade of the concentrate, a price per pound on a stated basis, and the share of the metal the buyer agrees to pay for.
The formula is simple. One tonne is 2,204.62 lb. A concentrate at 30% Ta2O5 holds about 661 lb of Ta2O5 in each tonne. Multiply by the quote in US$ per lb. At US$150 per lb that is about US$99,200 per tonne before the buyer’s deductions. The price shown by a public chart is never the cheque you receive. Treatment charges, freight, impurity penalties and payable percentages come off first, and they are set in each contract.
The paid benchmark series update weekly or daily and are behind a subscription. The dated figures on this page are the ones that were published openly, with the source and basis next to each. Always check today’s quote with a buyer or a price reporting agency before you sign anything.
How tantalite is priced: per pound of Ta2O5, not per tonne
Four price series set the tone for deals. Fastmarkets publishes a weekly tantalite price on a basis of 25% minimum Ta2O5, cost insurance and freight (cif) China, in US$ per lb of Ta2O5. Shanghai Metals Market lists a daily CIF China price for 30% tantalum ore in US$ per lb, tied to the Chinese standard GB/T 17415.1-2010. Argus assesses tantalite cif a main port. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports a yearly average in US$ per kilogram of Ta2O5 content.
Some terms you will meet in these quotes:
- Ta2O5: tantalum pentoxide, the form in which tantalum is counted in ore. It is 81.897% tantalum by weight, per a USGS footnote.
- Grade: the percentage of Ta2O5 in the concentrate. Buyers quote 25% or 30% as the base case. USGS assumes 32% when it converts trade data to tantalum content.
- Basis: the grade the price is quoted for, such as 25% minimum. A price on another grade is adjusted up or down.
- Cif: the seller pays freight and insurance to the named port, so cif prices sit above prices at the mine gate.
- Payable: the share of contained Ta2O5 that the buyer pays for. It is a contract term, not a market price.
Every series above is quoted in US dollars per pound or kilogram of oxide. A mine’s revenue therefore depends on grade and payable terms as much as on the headline number.
What a tonne of tantalite concentrate is worth at different prices
The table converts a price per lb of Ta2O5 into a value per tonne of concentrate. It is arithmetic on one tonne (2,204.62 lb) before any deduction. The prices in the first column are examples taken from the range of 2026 quotes, not a forecast.
| Quote (US$ per lb Ta2O5) | Per tonne at 25% Ta2O5 (US$) | Per tonne at 30% Ta2O5 (US$) |
|---|---|---|
| 80 | 44,100 | 52,900 |
| 100 | 55,100 | 66,100 |
| 150 | 82,700 | 99,200 |
| 200 | 110,200 | 132,300 |
USGS’s figure for 2025 is an estimate of US$180 per kg of Ta2O5 (the November 2025 monthly price), which is about US$81.6 per lb. At that level a tonne of 30% concentrate carries about US$54,000 of contained oxide. MMTA says prices ended 2025 a little over US$100 per lb, which is about US$66,000 per tonne of 30% concentrate. The 2026 quotes of about US$150 per lb took the same tonne to about US$99,000.

Recent tantalite prices: what the sources show
USGS reports the annual average tantalite price in its Mineral Commodity Summaries. The series moved between US$158 and 196 per kg of Ta2O5 from 2021 to 2025 (the 2025 value is an estimate, matching the November 2025 monthly average). The largest yearly change in that run was a 24% rise in 2022, and the series never doubled. That changed in 2026.

Trade press gives a clearer picture of the months since. The Rubaya mine collapse in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 28 January (Argus’s date; Reuters’ 16 March report says only “earlier this month”) pushed Argus’s assessment to US$128 to 132 per lb cif main airport on 5 February, up 10% in seven days. By 19 February Argus had it at US$149 to 156 per lb, up 43% from the start of the year. In mid-March Reuters put European prices at US$200 to 210 per lb. On 27 April the ASX-listed explorer Arcadia Minerals said European tantalite had potentially settled at about US$181 to 190 per lb, after about US$200 to 210 per lb for 25% concentrate in March. This 27 April report is the newest openly published tantalite quote used on this page.
The Minor Metals Trade Association (MMTA) adds the long view. It says prices ended 2025 a little over US$100 per lb of Ta2O5, reached about US$280 per lb FOB Kigali by late March (OnG Commodities research, published by MMTA), and were the highest since the 2000-2001 bubble, when the price peaked near US$350 before falling to about US$15 per lb by mid-2002. The Greenbushes tin-tantalum operation in Western Australia shows what that crash did on the ground: a collapse in tantalum prices in the mid-2000s led to the abandonment of the underground workings that had opened in 2001.

Four forces acted at once.
Chart
Reported tantalite quotes, early 2026
US$ per lb Ta2O5; midpoint of each quoted range; bases differ
- A supply shock. The Rubaya collapse killed more than 200 people and paused the flow of ore. Argus notes that Rubaya has long been a major source of coltan, the trade name for columbite-tantalite ore. MMTA adds that Chinese processors hold little ore inventory and must buy quickly when a block of supply drops out, which magnifies the price effect.
- Capacitor demand from AI. Argus reports that as many as 25 tantalum and tantalum-polymer capacitors sit on the boards that carry Nvidia’s H100 cards, and that the buildout of data centres has become a major demand driver. Yageo, which makes about 40% of tantalum-polymer capacitors, reported that its sales growth was mainly from AI and high-end uses.
- Government stockpiling. MMTA says the Chinese government keeps stockpiling tantalum, and that this may last longer than any disruption at Rubaya. In the United States, USGS notes that the Defense Logistics Agency placed a US$8.6 million order for tantalum ingots for the National Defense Stockpile in September 2025.
- Alloy demand. Argus analyst Sian Morris told Reuters that the super-alloys used in industrial gas turbine blades contain significant amounts of tantalum, which adds to the demand from data centres that build their own turbines.
Substitution is the main brake. USGS lists niobium and tungsten in carbides, and aluminum, ceramics and niobium in capacitors, as possible substitutes, with performance loss or higher cost. MMTA thinks prices will probably stay elevated until buyers begin to design tantalum out of their products.
Who supplies the ore
Supply is concentrated. USGS puts world mine output of tantalum at about 2,500 tonnes of contained tantalum in 2025 (estimate), and the DRC, Rwanda and Nigeria together make up about 2,090 of those tonnes, or roughly 84%. The DRC alone is above half, which is why a single mine collapse moves the world price. Geoscience Australia adds that global tantalum resources are too opaque to compare between countries, because large resources in the Congo are undocumented. Brazil, China and Australia are the next producers, and Ethiopia, Russia and Burundi report small amounts.
Chart
Mine output of tantalum by country
Six leading producers; tonnes of contained tantalum, 2024 and 2025 (estimate)
The United States has not mined tantalum since 1959, according to USGS, and depends on imports for 100% of its apparent consumption. Between 2021 and 2024, Australia supplied 64% of its imported tantalum ores and concentrates, Mozambique 10% and the DRC 9%. USGS values the tantalum consumed in 2025 at US$190 million, measured by the value of imports. If you are exploring in Nigeria or Ethiopia, our posts on mining licences in Ethiopia and on columbite-tantalite ore cover where tantalite is found.
Why two tantalite quotes rarely match
A reader who compares a Reuters quote with a Fastmarkets quote and with an MMTA figure will see gaps of US$50 per lb or more. In 2026 the reported figures were US$128 to 132, US$149 to 156, US$200 to 210 and US$280. Reasons for the gaps:
- Different basis. A price for 25% concentrate is not the same as a price for 30%. The Arcadia release states that the European quotes were for 25% concentrate and that China saw similar strength for 30%.
- Different delivery point. Cif Europe, cif China, cif a main port and FOB Kigali include different amounts of freight and risk.
- Different date. A weekly series and a spot report taken in the same month can sit weeks apart in a market that moved 90% in under three months.
- Origin and paperwork. Material that cannot show a clean chain of custody sells at a discount or cannot be sold to some smelters at all (see the conflict-minerals section below).
- Different publisher. The quotes come from price reporting agencies and trade bodies, not from an exchange, and each has its own method.

Example values only, not a quote or a benchmark. Price is an input: example, use today’s price for your grade and delivery point. Payable share and deductions come from your sales contract. 1 tonne = 2,204.62 lb; Ta2O5 is 81.897% tantalum (USGS, Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026).
What the price means for a tantalum project
For a tantalum project the price is the largest single input in the economics. Arcadia’s 27 April release gives a worked case: the 2023 definitive feasibility study for its Swanson tantalum project assumed US$91.87 per lb of 25% Ta2O5, cif main port Europe, and the company says each 10% rise in the assumed realised price adds about A$6.5 million to the project’s net present value. That is one company’s sensitivity for one project, not a rule for the sector, and the quotes above show how fast the input can change.
Three checks help an investor or licence holder read a price headline.
- Check which grade and delivery point the headline is for, and convert to your own basis.
- Check how long a price held. A spike driven by one accident can fall back when the mine restarts. MMTA says Rubaya supply could resume quickly but expects prices to stay elevated while stockpiling and demand effects last.
- Run the economics at several prices, including a price well below today’s, and compare with the 2021 to 2025 range of US$158 to 196 per kg.

Copper price per tonne: how it differs from tantalite
Copper trades on exchanges and is quoted per tonne of metal, so the unit is simpler. In its Mineral Commodity Summaries USGS gives an estimated 2025 average COMEX first-position price of 480 cents per lb, which is about US$10,580 per tonne. That is a refined-metal price. For the copper market, its drivers and a dated price, read our separate page on the copper price per tonne.
The comparison shows why tantalite is harder to track. Tantalum is a small market of about 2,500 tonnes a year, set by a few paid assessments, while copper has exchange prices that anyone can read. Per tonne of metal, tantalum is also worth far more than copper. A tonne of tantalum metal held in oxide at US$150 per lb of Ta2O5 comes to roughly US$404,000 of contained value (1 tonne of Ta needs 1.221 tonnes of Ta2O5, which is 2,692 lb), before any processing or payable terms.
Conflict-minerals rules that shape what a buyer will pay
Tantalum is one of the 3T minerals, with tin and tungsten, that carry due-diligence rules because of their history of funding armed groups. Argus explains that material from Rubaya and other occupied parts of the DRC is not eligible for trade internationally under the OECD due-diligence rules, and that it is becoming harder for traders and smelters to verify the origin of material sold through Rwanda. A UN Group of Experts report cited by Argus says M23, which took control of Rubaya in April 2024, taxes and sells tantalite and could raise as much as US$800,000 a month.
In the European Union, the Conflict Minerals Regulation has applied since 1 January 2021. It requires EU importers of tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold to source from responsible sources only. For a seller this means paperwork is part of the price. A mine with traceable output, audited processing and a clear licence can sell to more buyers than a mine that cannot document its origin. The video below explains who can hold a small-scale mining licence in Africa, which decides who is allowed to sell the ore.

What to watch next
Four things will drive the next move, and each can be checked in a public source.
- Rubaya output. MMTA expects supply from Rubaya could resume quickly, and Argus says the flow paused while miners held funerals; the pace of the restart affects Chinese buying.
- Peace talks. USGS reports that the DRC and Rwanda signed a US-mediated peace agreement in June 2025, and Argus reports that the Washington Accords of 5 December 2025 have so far had little effect on fighting.
- Capacitor orders. Argus notes that the large technology firms raised capital spending plans for 2026, and that capacitor makers raised prices on many ranges in 2025.
- New supply. MMTA notes that China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining (CNMC) now controls the Pitinga mine in Brazil through its acquisition of Mineraรงรฃo Taboca, and that Taboca’s tantalum supply could rise by as much as 150%.
Finding tantalum ground: where satellites help
Tantalite is found in pegmatites, coarse igneous rocks that can also host lithium and tin, as in the USGS deposit model for lithium-cesium-tantalum pegmatites. Greenbushes, mentioned above, is one example. A price rise sends more licence holders and prospectors to look at pegmatite belts, but the first job is to pick where to sample. Satellite imagery can screen a large licence for rock contrasts, alteration and structure that can point to targets, before a field team walks the ground. Farmonaut’s satellite mineral detection covers tantalum among 20+ minerals, and the output is an exploration target, not a resource estimate. If you want a screen of your own area, you can request a quote through our mining query form, read about satellite-based mineral detection, or contact the team.
Respect land rights and local law. Get permission from the owner and the licence authority before you sample, and do not use mercury or other harmful chemicals.

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of tantalite per tonne?
It depends on grade and the quote used. A tonne of 30% Ta2O5 concentrate holds about 661 lb of Ta2O5, so a quote of US$150 per lb gives about US$99,200 per tonne before the buyer’s deductions. The calculator on this page shows the sum for your own numbers.
Why is tantalite priced per pound and not per tonne?
Because buyers pay for the contained oxide. Two tonnes of concentrate with different grades hold different amounts of Ta2O5, so a per-pound-of-oxide price is the fair common unit.
How much did the tantalite price rise after the Rubaya collapse?
Argus reported a 43% rise from the start of the year to US$149 to 156 per lb by 19 February. Reuters reported a 90% year-to-date rise for European prices in mid-March, to US$200 to 210 per lb. The figures use different bases.
What is the difference between coltan, tantalite and columbite?
Coltan is the trade name for columbite-tantalite ore. Tantalite is the tantalum-rich member of the series and columbite is the niobium-rich member. Tantalum concentrate is priced on its Ta2O5 content. Our page on coltan ore and coltan metal explains the minerals in more detail.
Which countries produce the most tantalum?
According to USGS, the DRC produced about 1,300 tonnes of contained tantalum in 2025 (estimate), Rwanda 400, Nigeria 390 and Brazil 190, out of a world total of about 2,500.
Where can I check today’s tantalite price?
The benchmark series are Fastmarkets (tantalite, basis 25% minimum Ta2O5, cif China), Argus and Shanghai Metals Market (30% ore, CIF China). All are paid services. A broker or buyer can also give you a quote for your own grade.
How is the price of copper per tonne different from tantalite?
Copper is quoted per tonne of refined metal on exchanges, with prices published daily. Tantalite is quoted per lb of contained oxide, in assessments by a few price reporters. See our page on the copper price per tonne for the copper side.
Does the tantalite price depend on where the ore comes from?
Yes. Material with a documented, responsible origin can be sold to more buyers, including EU importers bound by the Conflict Minerals Regulation. Argus says ore from occupied areas of eastern DRC is not eligible for international trade, so traceability affects both who will buy and what they will pay.
Is tantalite a good investment?
This page gives no investment advice. The data above show that prices can double within months and that after the 2000-2001 bubble MMTA says the price fell from about US$350 to about US$15 per lb by mid-2002. Anyone considering exposure should speak to a licensed adviser and check each company’s own filings.
Can satellite data find tantalite?
Satellite data cannot see tantalite itself. It can map the rock types, alteration and faults around pegmatites so that field sampling starts in better places. Sampling and assays are still needed to prove grade.
This page is for information only. It is not investment advice. Prices are dated quotes from the named sources and differ by grade and delivery point; confirm a current quote with a buyer or price reporter before you trade.
