Newmont is the biggest gold company in the world by output: its attributable production was 5.889 million ounces in 2025, about 71% more than runner-up Agnico Eagle. On the bauxite side, the biggest single mining area is Weipa in Queensland, where Rio Tinto reported 39.5 million tonnes in 2025. This page ranks nine gold producers and seven bauxite mines from the companies’ own 2025 reports, shows what each number measures, and ends with two calculators you can run on your own figures.
Terms used below. Moz means million troy ounces of gold (one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams). Attributable production counts only the share of a mine that a company owns. Payable production is the metal contained in products that are sold or will be sold. Gold-equivalent counts by-product metals such as copper or silver at gold prices. Mt means million tonnes. Dry metric tons (Mdmt) strip out the moisture in raw ore.
Biggest gold companies in the world, ranked by output
The table lists each producer’s reported 2025 gold output, highest first. Newmont is far ahead. The next four sit in a tight band between 3.1 and 3.5 Moz, so a change of basis (attributable or 100%, gold or gold-equivalent) can swap their order. Mining.com’s February 2026 ranking, for example, puts Zijin in fourth place, while the ounces below put it sixth.

Sources for the table: Agnico Eagle’s fourth-quarter release (3,447,367 payable ounces), Barrick’s annual report (3,255 koz, down 17% from 3,911 koz), NMMC’s results (3.15 Moz, up 1.9%), AngloGold Ashanti’s results as reported by The Citizen (3.1 Moz, up 16%), Zijin’s results as reported by Mysteel (90 tonnes), Polyus’ results (2,528.8 koz, down 16%), Gold Fields’ annual report (2.44 Moz against 2.07 Moz in 2024) and Kinross’ year-end release (about 2.0 Moz gold-equivalent). The 90-tonne Zijin figure equals 2.89 Moz by our conversion (1 tonne is 32,150.7 troy ounces). Koz means thousand ounces.
What changed for the leaders
Newmont met its own guidance, but output fell 14% from 6.849 Moz in 2024 because it sold several mines, including Akyem, which went to Zijin (Mining.com). It still reported the first commercial production from Ahafo North in Ghana.
Agnico Eagle overtook Barrick for second place. Its payable output beat the middle of its guidance range, and the company expects 3.3 to 3.5 Moz a year from 2026 to 2028.
Barrick (renamed from Barrick Gold on 6 May 2025; NYSE ticker B) lost ground after operations at the Loulo-Gounkoto complex in Mali were suspended in January 2025. Barrick’s annual report says provisional administration ended on 16 December 2025 and it regained control and guides to 2.90 to 3.25 Moz for 2026. For the share-price angle see our guide on Barrick’s stock.
Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Company is state-owned and runs the Muruntau deposit, which it calls the world’s largest gold deposit, with a resource base above 100 Moz.
AngloGold Ashanti reached 3.1 Moz after a full year of Sukari following its Centamin takeover, and bought Augusta Gold in Nevada, per Mining.com.
Zijin, Polyus and Gold Fields follow. Polyus fell 16% because Olimpiada and Blagodatnoye moved to later pit stages. Gold Fields rose 18% as Salares Norte reached commercial production in the third quarter. Zijin bought the Raygorodok mine in Kazakhstan (Mining.com).
Kinross held its three-year outlook of about 2.0 Moz gold-equivalent. Others close behind include Harmony Gold and Northern Star Resources, and Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg adds about 1 Moz of gold as a by-product of copper, per Mining.com. For more on the top producer, read our profile of the largest gold producer, and for Gold Fields see our Gold Fields overview.
How we ranked the companies
We used one metric, reported 2025 gold output in million ounces, and took each number from the company’s own filing or results release wherever we could open one. AngloGold Ashanti and Zijin figures come from news reports on their results. We did not rank by market value, reserves or profit, because those answer different questions.
Three limits apply. First, the bases differ: Newmont and Barrick report attributable ounces, NMMC and Polyus report totals, and Kinross and Gold Fields add by-product metals as gold-equivalent. Second, fiscal years differ: Northern Star reports to June, so it is left out of the ounce ranking. Third, Mining.com’s own February 2026 ranking orders some of these companies differently, which shows how much the basis matters. The nine producers together mined roughly 28.7 Moz on these mixed bases, about 27% of the 3,300 tonnes (about 106 Moz) that USGS estimates for world mine output in 2025.
Largest gold mines behind the rankings
Most of the big names get their ounces from a handful of very large mines. The biggest single gold-mining operation in the 2025 filings is Nevada Gold Mines, a joint venture run by Barrick (61.5%) with Newmont (38.5%). Barrick’s annual report shows 1,591 koz for its share, and Newmont’s statistics show 999 koz for its share, so the whole complex produced about 2.59 Moz in 2025 (our sum). Barrick’s report puts Carlin at 687 koz, Cortez at 454 koz, Turquoise Ridge at 341 koz and Phoenix at 109 koz for its 61.5% share, which scales to about 1.12 Moz for Carlin on a 100% basis. Goldstrike, named in older rankings, is part of the Carlin operations.

World gold mine production, eight leading countries
Tonnes of gold, 2025 estimate
Muruntau in Uzbekistan is the other giant, but NMMC does not publish a mine-level output, so it cannot be ranked mine against mine. Among Newmont’s mines, the largest in 2025 were Ahafo South at 664 koz, Lihir at 585 koz and Boddington at 565 koz. Kinross says its Paracatu mine in Brazil produced over 600 koz in 2025, the eighth year in a row above 500 koz.
Gold mining is also spread widely. USGS estimates 3,300 tonnes of world mine production in 2025. China led with 380 tonnes, ahead of Russia (310), Australia (280), Canada (200) and the United States (160). The World Gold Council’s production data also names China as the largest producer, with around 10% of 2025 output.
Reserves show how long the output can last. Agnico Eagle ended 2025 with record gold reserves of 55.4 Moz (1,330 Mt grading 1.30 grams per tonne, g/t), and says its pipeline could lift annual output by 20% to 30% over the next decade. Grade is the amount of gold in the rock, in grams per tonne.
What an ounce costs the big producers
Size does not decide profit. The all-in sustaining cost (AISC) of an ounce, the cost to produce it and keep the mine running, was 1,637 US$ at Barrick and 1,571 US$ per gold-equivalent ounce sold at Kinross in 2025. Agnico Eagle reports a different measure, production cost per ounce, at 965 US$ in 2025, so the three numbers are not directly comparable. Against an average market price of 3,432 US$ an ounce (Barrick’s report), each producer made a large margin per ounce. Higher royalties took part of that, as Agnico Eagle’s release notes.
Gold output and margin calculator
To compare any mine with the numbers above, use the calculator in this section. It converts ore tonnes, grade and recovery to ounces, then applies a price and a cost per ounce. The defaults are round examples, not a forecast for any mine. Replace the price with today’s price and the cost with a figure from the company you are studying.
Calculator
How many ounces and what margin does your ore give?

- Contained gold in the ore: 48,226 oz
- Gross revenue at your price (US$): $151,912,164
- Margin before tax at your cost (US$): $82,466,603
Example values only, not a benchmark or a forecast. Price is an input: example, use today’s price in US$ per troy ounce. The cost default is a round example; Barrick reported 1,637 US$ per ounce AISC for 2025 and Kinross 1,571 US$ per gold-equivalent ounce (company reports). 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. Results are before tax, royalties and financing.
Biggest bauxite mines in the world
Bauxite is the ore of aluminium. Raw bauxite is refined to alumina, and USGS gives the rule of thumb that 4 tons of dried bauxite make 2 tons of alumina, which make 1 ton of aluminum. World mine output was an estimated 440 Mt in 2025. Guinea mined about 150 Mt of that, Australia 97 Mt and China 87 Mt (USGS, February 2026).

| 7 | Juruti, Parรก | Brazil | Alcoa | 6.7 Mdmt | Alcoa 10-K, dry metric tons |
Sources: Rio Tinto’s Form 20-F, Alcoa’s Form 10-K and Hydro’s fourth-quarter report. Hydro’s Paragominas output was 10,516 kt in 2025 and 10,506 kt in 2024.
Rio Tinto’s own page says East Weipa stopped production in 2024, so Weipa now means the Andoom and Amrun mines. Amrun produced 25.3 Mt in 2025, an 8.7% rise. Other large mines exist, such as the Bokรฉ-region operations of Sociรฉtรฉ Miniรจre de Bokรฉ (SMB) in Guinea, but no mine-level 2025 output has been published for them, so they cannot be placed in the table. For a comparison of the exporting countries, see our bauxite exporter guide.
Bauxite companies and operators that matter
Rio Tinto is the largest bauxite producer by reported tonnes. Its 2025 total was 62.4 Mt, a record and up 6% on 2024’s 58.7 Mt, counting its shares of MRN and the Guinean mine at Sangaredi. Alcoa’s attributable bauxite production was 37.5 Mdmt in 2025, made up of Darling Range 25.8, Juruti 6.7, Sangaredi 3.7, Poรงos de Caldas 0.5 and Al Ba’itha in Saudi Arabia 0.8. Alcoa sold its interest in the Saudi joint venture on 1 July 2025, so that last figure covers half a year. Alcoa’s Darling Range ore is only crushed and then carried by a long conveyor to the Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries. For a deeper look at refining, read our alumina mining and refining guide.
Chart
Guinea bauxite shipments by operator, January 2026
Million tonnes shipped in one month; total from licensed operators 20.26 Mt
Norsk Hydro’s main mine is Paragominas in Brazil, at 10.5 Mt. Guinea has the most new tonnage. In January 2026, licensed operators there shipped 20.26 Mt in one month. SMB led with 6.57 Mt (about 32% of the total), then Chalco Guinea with 2.64 Mt and CBG with 1.64 Mt. Chinese-affiliated companies controlled more than 55% of the volume, according to AlCircle’s July 2026 trade analysis.
One name from older lists has changed. Guinea revoked the Guinea Alumina Corporation concession of Emirates Global Aluminium in August 2025 and handed it to a state-backed company, Nimba Mining, according to Mining Technology. The same report says the concession covers 690 km2 and about 400 Mt of resources, and that operations and exports had been suspended since October 2024. Guinea has also considered a cap of 150 Mt on 2026 exports, per Signal Ocean data quoted by AlCircle, so Guinean volumes are a policy question as well as a geology one.
How long the big bauxite mines can run
Licence terms set a floor on mine life. Alcoa’s Darling Range mining lease runs to 2045, and the CBG lease at Sangaredi to 2039 and is renewable in 25-year steps, according to Alcoa’s 10-K. At Weipa, Rio Tinto says Amrun will extend operations by decades and that it announced early works and final engineering on the Kangwinan project to investigate higher output.
What to check when you compare mines
- Basis: 100% of the mine or only the owner’s share.
- Moisture: dry tonnes weigh less than wet tonnes for the same ore.
- Year: calendar year or fiscal year.
- Grade: for bauxite, the alumina content and silica content of the ore; for gold, grams per tonne.
- Status: whether the licence, export permit and rail or port access are in place.
Which countries mine the most bauxite
Company rankings hide where the ore sits. Guinea holds 7,400 Mt of the 29,000 Mt of world bauxite reserves, about a quarter, and mined about a third of the world’s tonnes in 2025. Australia holds 3,700 Mt of reserves and Vietnam 3,100 Mt. The United States mines very little: USGS says bauxite and bauxitic clay were produced in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, mostly for non-metallurgical uses, with the tonnage withheld. The US imported an estimated 3.0 Mt for consumption in 2025 and holds 20 Mt of reserves. Read more in our guide to bauxite mining in the USA and the top bauxite-producing countries.

How bauxite is mined, from strip to ship
Bauxite sits in blankets of weathered rock close to the surface, so it is mined in open cuts. Crews strip the topsoil and the thin cover, remove the ore, then replace the soil and replant. At Darling Range the ore only needs crushing before it moves by conveyor, as Alcoa’s filing describes. In Guinea, CBG moves ore by company-operated rail from Sangaredi to Kamsar port, where it is dried and loaded onto ships. Most of the world’s bauxite is then refined to alumina and smelted to aluminium.

The calculator below uses the USGS rule of thumb to show how much alumina and aluminium a given tonnage of bauxite can feed. The environmental side matters too: land clearing, dust, water use and the red mud left after refining.
Calculator
How much alumina and aluminium can your bauxite feed?
Enter your own bauxite tonnage and the conversion ratios.
- Alumina produced: 5.00 Mt
- Bauxite for 1 Mt of aluminium: 4.0 Mt
- Share of Rio Tinto 2025 bauxite output: 16.0%
Defaults follow the USGS rule of thumb: 4 tons of dried bauxite make 2 tons of alumina, which make 1 ton of aluminum (USGS, Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026). Real ratios depend on the ore’s alumina content and the refinery. The default tonnage is an example, not any mine’s output. The comparison uses Rio Tinto 2025 bauxite output of 62.4 Mt.
What satellites add to a mine or company review
Annual reports tell you what a company produced. They do not show the ground. Satellite images of a mine or a licence area show pit growth, stockpiles, tailings and regrowth after mining, and they can screen a gold or bauxite licence for the surface clues that justify drilling. Farmonaut turns a KML, KMZ or polygon boundary into satellite-derived exploration targets. Those targets sit ahead of any resource estimate and are not a substitute for drilling.
