UTV Farm Implements: What Your Side-by-Side Can Pull

The UTV farm implements that earn their keep are the ones your machine can safely pull or carry: spreaders, sprayers, cultipackers, graders, plows and trailers. Check the ratings first. Among the five models below, published towing limits run from 1,300 lb on a Kubota RTV-X to 2,500 lb on a Polaris Ranger XP 1000, and bed limits from about 660 lb to 1,100 lb.

This guide matches each implement to a job, gives dated specs and list prices for five farm side-by-sides, and shows how to calibrate a UTV sprayer. UTV farm implements by job

Buy for the job you do every week, not the job you do once a year. The table lists common attachments, what each does and the rating or fitting to check. Weights vary widely by maker and size, so use the figure on the spec sheet of the unit you are quoted.

Manure spreaders

A small tow-behind spreader moves waste from stalls and pens to pasture without a loader tractor. The attachment maker ABI pitches its compact models at owners with one to eleven horses or a similar number of other animals. That is a maker’s sizing, so compare it with your own daily volume and how often you plan to empty the pile. Weigh a full load in your head, too. Wet manure is heavy, and a spreader that is fine empty can exceed a mid-size UTV’s tow limit when full. Check local rules on where and when you may spread, especially near water.

Broadcast spreaders

These throw seed, granular fertilizer, lime or salt in a wide band from a spinning disc. They suit pasture overseeding, food plots and winter yard work. Spread width changes with material and speed, so run a test strip and follow the fertilizer or seed label for rates. Wash the unit after using salt or fertilizer, since both attack metal.

Cultipackers

A cultipacker firms the seedbed and presses seed into the soil. ABI describes this pattern: pack once to form the surface, seed, then pack again to set the seed and leave small pockets that hold moisture. It is a low-speed job, so it suits a UTV on small plots. On larger acreage, compare the time against a tractor.

Sprayers

A UTV sprayer covers spot weeds and small pastures from the seat. Liquid adds weight quickly: water is about 8.3 lb per gallon, so a 50-gallon tank adds over 400 lb before the sprayer itself. The calibration steps have their own section below.

Graders, drags and trailers

A grader or drag keeps lanes and yards passable, which matters when the same lane carries feed trucks. Trailers move fencing, feed and water, and a dump bed saves hand unloading. A water trailer is usually a better idea than a homemade tank in the bed, because full tanks sit high and raise the load. Add the trailer’s own weight to what it carries when you check the tow limit.

Snow plows

Where winters are hard, a plow keeps barns and gates open. Buy the mount designed for your exact model. Some UTVs, such as those built with front and rear 2-inch receiver hitches, make mounting easier, but a plow blade still loads the front axle, so check the maker’s fitting list.

These five models come from the original version of this page and were rechecked against spec listings in November 2026. This is not a ranking by test results; we did not test them. Each has a different strength, and the “best for” lines reflect the published specs.

1. Polaris Ranger XP 1000

Best for: heavy towing on larger properties. It shares the top tow rating in this group with strong gas power. It suits trailers and larger towed spreaders. A cab or other trim can change price and ratings, so check the sheet for your exact version.

2. Can-Am Defender HD10

Best for: the same 2,500 lb tow rating at a lower list price than the Ranger trim shown. Compare equal trims before deciding, because the Defender range is wide and cab versions cost much more.

3. John Deere XUV835M

Best for: farms already tied to a Deere dealer for parts and service. The dealer sheet shows a 2,000 lb tow rating and 1,493 lb payload. Ratings differ between listings for this model, so ask your dealer for the sheet that applies to your machine.

4. Honda Pioneer 700

Best for: small farms that need light hauling at the lowest list price here. At 1,500 lb tow and 1,000 lb payload, it suits small spreaders, cultipackers and light trailers. Heavier loaded implements can outrun it.

5. Kubota RTV-X diesel

Best for: buyers who want diesel fuel and a hydraulic dump bed. This is the one diesel in the group, and its tow rating is the lowest. Check that gap against what you plan to pull, because a bigger engine number does not settle it. The RTV-X1140 has a convertible bed: 1,102 lb in long form and 661 lb in short form with the rear seats in use.

How to match UTV farm implements to your machine

Three separate limits apply, and sellers often quote only one. Bed limit is what the cargo box can hold. Payload is everything the machine carries, including people, the bed load and accessories. Tow rating is what it can pull, and that figure includes the trailer or implement itself.

1. List your weekly jobs. Write down the heaviest full load for each, not the empty implement weight.
2. Add people and fittings. A driver and passenger plus a bed-mounted tank can use up payload before you add tools.
3. Check hitch and mount. Confirm receiver size, hitch height and any electric or hydraulic connections.
4. Ask about ground drive. Ground-driven implements need traction from the UTV tires, so soft ground can limit what works.
5. Leave a margin. Slopes, mud and wet loads all make a rated load feel heavier. Read the manual for any slope or trailer braking limits.

Calibrate a UTV sprayer in two ways

Calibration protects crops and saves chemical. Two university methods can be adapted to a UTV. Use clean water during calibration, and follow the product label and local rules for rates, protective gear and licensing. Ask your extension office or an adviser if unsure.

The gallons-per-minute method

The UC Davis and UC Cooperative Extension sheet on calibrating an ATV sprayer for broadcast applications can be adapted to a UTV boom. Catch nozzle output for a set time and convert it to gallons per minute. Then work out your treated acres per minute from boom width and speed, aiming for about 5 mph. Divide the first by the second. Its worked example gives 3.94 gallons per minute over 0.22 acres per minute, or 18 gallons per acre. A 50-gallon tank at that rate treats 2.8 acres. The authors call 10 to 20 gallons per acre a good range for typical ground applications.

The 1/128-acre method

Ohio State’s boom sprayer calibration fact sheet (2016) uses a neat shortcut. Drive a set distance based on nozzle spacing and time it. Then catch nozzle output for the same time. The average ounces caught equal gallons per acre. A 20-inch spacing uses a 204-foot run. Clean or replace any nozzle more than 10% from the average, and adjust if the rate is more than 5% from your target.

Safety when your UTV carries or tows implements

A side-by-side is a work machine with rollover risk, and implements change how it handles. The extension Ag Safety and Health network warns that loads in the bed raise the center of gravity, so take turns slowly and smoothly. On a slope, drive straight up or down rather than across, and turn only once you are at the top or bottom. Stay back from ditches: its example is six feet from the edge of a six-foot ditch. Buckle up even with a roll bar, secure bed loads, and keep passengers in their seats.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission counted 537 deaths with recreational off-highway vehicles and 49 with utility terrain vehicles for 2017 to 2019, with 79 more it could not assign to either group. Its report separates the two by top speed, so a fast farm side-by-side may fall in the first group, and CPSC calls data for those years complete or nearly complete, with collection ongoing. A Senate committee report records that 66 percent of 224 fatal recreational-vehicle incidents in a 2014 CPSC review involved rollover.

ATV or UTV for farm implements?

Pick by load and people. The same extension network lists what sets a UTV apart from an ATV: a cargo bed, easy seat access, power steering, pedals, a seat for a passenger and optional cabs. If you carry a helper, hauls or a bed-mounted sprayer, those points favor a UTV. For solo jobs with small towed tools, an ATV may be enough, but check its own rack and tow limits.

What is the difference between a farm UTV and an ATV?

A UTV has side-by-side seats, pedals, a steering wheel and a cargo bed. An ATV has a straddle seat and handlebars. CPSC’s definitions also rest on these seating differences.

Which implement should I buy first for a UTV?

Choose the one for your most frequent job. With livestock, consider a small manure spreader or dump trailer; for pasture and plots, a sprayer or broadcast spreader. Check full-load weight against your ratings first.

Can a UTV pull a disc or plow?
